Switzerland-Italy train ride traverses different worlds

It takes 27 minutes to pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel. It's something of a dreamlike experience: you're on the train hurtling through lush Swiss scenery – trackside haystacks and farmhouses, small villages with a single towering steeple, distant mist-crowned mountains, and dramatic landscape unfolding in more shades of green than you knew existed. Then all of a sudden, everything goes dark. Pitch black. You're still moving at about 150 miles per hour, but now you can't see where you're going.

Jazzed about New Orleans

There are close to 100 stations on my Pandora playlist, ranging from classical and folk to rock and hip hop. It's comfort music, soothing my soul at the end of a long day, beckoning a liberal pour of red with a side of couch collapse and longneck candles.

Hard driving and smooth sailing in Coastal Connecticut

Because there are no city-sized theme parks in Southern Connecticut, you must find your thrills there in real life. I had just come from helping to herd a crew of second-graders through the Visitor Center at the PEZ factory in the town of Orange–a fragrant, colorful diversion for the nation's devoted army of "Pez Heads" and for civilians like us, who just like popping dispenser heads and downing twelve-packs of chewy PEZ bricks. I was now rolling in an easterly direction along Interstate 95, toward Mystic Seaport.

Editorial: Poland's crackdown on speech

The United States was absolutely correct to criticize a new Polish law that makes it a crime to blame Poland for atrocities committed by the Nazis on Polish soil. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, while acknowledging that "terms like 'Polish death camps' are painful and misleading," insisted that such false characterizations must be countered by open debate, scholarship and education, not by criminal sanctions. The new law, Tillerson said, "adversely affects freedom of speech and academic inquiry." He's right.
