Art Basel will delay its signature Swiss art fair, originally slated for June, until September, fair officials announced Thursday.
Public show dates are now slated for Sept. 17-20, with invitation-only preview dates on Sept. 15 and 16 in Basel, Switzerland. It will be the fair’s 50th edition. About 93,000 attended the 2019 fair.
:We thank our galleries for the support and understanding of our highly complex decision to postpone the fair,” said Art Basel Global Director Marc Spiegler in a statement. “We hope that the situation improves swiftly...at the same time, we are aware of how dynamic the COVID-19 situation is and will continue to monitor the developments closely. The health and safety of our exhibitors, partners, guests, and teams remains our main priority, and we will adapt all our planning to the developing situation.”
Art Basel previously announced it would cancel the 2020 edition of its Hong Kong fair, originally slated for March 19-21. It was rescheduled for March 2021.
The Miami Beach show is slated to continue on its original 2020 dates, Dec. 3-6, with VIP previews Dec. 2.
Art Basel and Miami’s Art Week have become key economic drivers for South Florida, bringing thousands of wealthy collectors and art enthusiasts to the region since its 2002 launch.
