Doral Academy names a new football coach

The Doral Academy football program has a new head coach.

After succeeding legendary Belen Jesuit head coach Rich Stuart three years ago, Eddie Delgado stepped down at the end of last season but was not out of a head-coaching job for very long.

Doral administrators announced Wednesday that Delgado has been hired as its new head football coach, succeeding Jase Stewart, who stepped down at the end of last season.

Delgado began his coaching career in 1991 as a JV assistant coach at Belen before joining Stuart’s staff as the offensive coordinator in 1995 and then switching over to defensive coordinator in 2002, where he remained until being named head coach following the 2016 season.

He was also a key component to Belen’s magical run all the way to the Class 5A state championship game in 2009 before suffering a 28-7 loss to Pensacola in the title game.

“We are extremely excited to have a coach like Eddie Delgado on board,” Doral athletic director Carlos Perez said. “He comes in highly credentialed with many years of experience and are confident he will lead our program to great success in the future.”

A South Florida native who attended FIU getting a Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Managemenht, Delgado finished 18-10 as the head coach at Belen and the team won the district championship in 2017 and 2018.
